For a long time his main interest laid in the examination of social structures and urban development in his home region Southern California. Davis most recent publications are concerned with long-forgotten major famines, which he does not describe as such but as genocide – as, for example, in his book “Late Victorian Holocoust”. Slums are explained in relation to El Nino events.

Mike Davis is honoured with the medal of the Schelling Prize for Architectural Theory 2004.

British director Patrick Keiller is honoured with the medal of the Schelling Prize for Architectural Theory 2004 for his intermediary work, inter alia with the film medium. Keiller’s project “Robinson in Ruins”, a film about the future of the landscape, must be counted as a result in a year long research work.
